Building a bookshelf without a workshop

February 2026

Pine boards from the hardware store, a borrowed circular saw, a drill, and far too much sandpaper.

The design is deliberately boring: two sides, five shelves, a thin back panel to stop it racking. Shelves are held by dowels rather than screws, mostly because I liked the look.

Lessons

Measure the actual board thickness. "18 mm" turned out to be 17.4 mm, which is exactly enough to make every joint wobble.

Finish before assembly. Oiling the inside corners afterwards is miserable.
